Advocacy

VCFS, a unique child protection NGO in Sierra Leone, works in partnership with the Sierra Leone Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs, the Freetown City Council, and the Family Support Unit (FSU) of the Sierra Leone Police. We also work with other child protection agencies and community-based organizations to complement the government’s efforts in addressing the numerous risks affecting vulnerable children in Sierra Leone.

Our core programs are centred on providing an emergency shelter for children in crisis, continuous family tracing and reunification, placing children in certified foster homes in communities, and emphasising education – ensuring that children are fully engaged at school. We also provide adoption support services.

VCFS’s specific areas of child advocacy include:

  • The creation of awareness and advocating against sexual abuse of girls below the age of 18.
  • The education and creating awareness of parents giving their daughters in early marriage.
  • The cultural involvement of female family members giving up their young daughters to FGM.
  • Gender-based violence against girls and young women (GBV).
  • Cultural deprivation of parents sending their daughters to school.
  • Encouragement of girls to learn vocational skills such as hairdressing, tailoring, catering, nursing, etc.
